Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and Ataturk Memorial
Thursday, November 1. I was alarmed at the extent of the devastation caused by hurricane Sandy. I get NPR on my Smartphone. Early morning trip to the museum of Asia Minor. Museum was very interesting as it had artifacts from thousands of years ago. The reliefs and some of the utensils, tools, and jewelry were astonishing in both their age and the excellent condition that they were in. The mother theme continued to thread through the presentations by Mert.
With large breasts and wide hips, the figurine has been linked to both agriculture and fertility. Her seated position between 2 leopards suggests she is a person of power. The round shape resting between her legs is either the head of a child being born or the skull of a revered ancestor.

Ataturk Mausoleum
The grounds were amazingly beautiful. We saw schoolchildren with their teachers paying homage to Ataturk. That was pretty interesting. We tried PIDE, a local bread that is almost like pizza, for lunch. It was very tasty! We had a group dinner tonight and had to do our buddy stories (those who have been on Rick Steves tours know what this is.) It was Jack's and my intention to mix a little fact and fiction. Jackie thinks mine was pretty darned funny--something about his "buddy" being raised by owls. And to prove that he was, Ben queried him if he knew Jim Spurlin. Larry, his buddy, responded, "Who?" Ben didn't need any more proof.
